Dr. Engels, DietrichManaging Director, Cologne
Dr. Dietrich Engels has been managing director of the ISG since 1998. He studied sociology, philosophy, political sciences and theology in Marburg and Göttingen (MA in sociology). He received his PhD at the University of Göttingen 1989 (with a panel study on sociology of religion). Since then he is working in the area of social research and focuses on dimensions of living conditions (conditions of life approach), social reporting (e.g. on poverty and social exclusion), integration monitoring, rehabilitation, gerontology and civic engagement.
Since 1992 he has been working as an advisor for the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. He was working on the reforms of the social welfare laws (1992-2004) and is involved in the work on the German Federal Government’s reports on poverty and wealth. He evaluated the 9th volume of the Social Security Code (rehabilitation and participation of people with disabilities) and published reports on the situation of people with disabilities. In the fields of social gerontology and care research, he has conducted quantitative studies (analysis of survey data) and qualitative evaluations (effectivity analysis of innovative structures) on local, national and international level. He has observed and analyzed in particular the process of the introduction of the care insurance in Germany. Beyond this he was responsible for the reports on integration indicators for the German Federal Government.
